Hands up who loves their dog or cat to bits and would be lost without them?

In the UK we are a bunch of softies when it comes to our pets and these days they are often a very important part of the family. They give us their unconditional love and most of us would not be without them. So imagine if your pet went missing and you had no way of tracing them?

Sadly we don’t yet have GPS for pets (although I’m sure it is only a matter of time). However we have the next best thing, microchipping. Microchipping is when a tiny implant is injected under the skin of your pet, usually at the back of the neck. This implant contains a unique code that, when scanned can be used against a database to trace the owners of that animal.

This means that if your pet escapes or has an accident and is found the rescue centre, police or vets looking after them can contact you straight away and reunite you. Certainly from a vets perspective, microchips are a god send. If we have an injured animal brought into us, finding a microchip means we can contact the owner straight away and get their pet the right treatment.

It is also important to remember that from 6th April 2016 all dogs in England must have a microchip to identify them by law. You may face a fine of up to £500 if your dog is not microchipped and registered on a database. One other thing to remember – don’t forget to keep your details up to date with the database company. If you move or change phone numbers then we can not trace you to return your pet.

So this Valentines day why not show your pet how much you love them and get them a microchip so you are bonded for life!

Best Wishes from all at  MVP-logo
