Work on new Toucan crossing and improved cycling and walking route to Kings’ School, Winchester, set to start this autumn

Work is due to start on widening the path and constructing a Toucan crossing on Romsey Road in Winchester. The improvements will make it easier for people to walk or cycle to and from school, bringing benefits to their health and well-being as well as easing congestion at busy times.

Hampshire County Council has appointed Knights Brown Construction Ltd to carry out the works from Monday October 5 to improve pedestrian and cycling access to Kings’ School. Construction should take around nine weeks.

Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, said:

This project will make it easier for people to cycle or walk to Kings’ School by providing a widened path along Romsey Road between Stanmore Lane and Battery Hill, to connect into Kings’ School. We will also be upgrading the existing puffin crossing connecting Battery Hill to Kings Road to a Toucan crossing. This upgrade will allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross the busy Romsey Road to access Kings School.

As the scheme to encourage cycling and walking, this will require the removal of six trees, which are in poor condition. We will be mitigating this, in agreement with Winchester City Council, by planting new trees nearby, including at Kilham Lane and the open green area north east of the Romsey Road / Battery Hill junction. I am confident that the net benefit of reducing carbon – both by planting new trees and providing good cycling and walking routes to reduce car journeys, is positive and reinforces the County Council’s commitment to focus on the environmental impact.

The £430,000 scheme is being funded by Community Infrastructure Levy funds and developer contributions.

The tree removal work is scheduled to take place on Sunday 18 October between 9 am and 5 pm with local signed diversions in place.

From Monday 2 November to Friday 13 November night works will take place from 7 pm to 5 am. During night working, there will be a lane closure meaning inbound traffic will not be permitted to travel towards Winchester along Romsey Road. Inbound traffic will be diverted via St Cross Road (B3335). Outbound traffic will be able to use Romsey Road as normal. Night works are required to minimise impact on this busy network.

Councillor Humby continued:

I apologise for any disruption that the works may cause but would like to reassure you that we will do all we can to keep any inconvenience to a minimum during the works. Please allow more time for your journey.

The works are weather dependent, and the dates may be subject to change. For programme updates and further information about this scheme, please visit the project webpage: https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/transportschemes/kingsschoolaccessimprovements
