Construction of Winchester’s sport & leisure park is well underway with the site having reached its first key milestone – the piling and the 50-metre pool tank excavation is now complete. Building partner, Willmott Dixon, is currently undertaking pipework and concrete works, and the pad foundations of the building are also underway.
Willmott Dixon’s ‘Building Lives Academy’, which offers construction related training to local people, has now seen 21 individuals gaining qualifications and certifications on site, with a further 36 places confirmed and 60 more next year.
Willmott Dixon is committed be being good neighbours and has been awarded 84% in the Considerate Constructors Scheme. In line with the council’s aspiration to become carbon neutral, improved sustainable methods of construction are being adopted to help further lower the carbon footprint of the site including reducing carbon waste and water usage.
Cllr Malcolm Prince, Cabinet Member for sport, leisure and communities, said:
We have taken the time to review the plans for the sport & leisure park and there will be no major changes to the building which would result in the project being delayed. However, we will be focussing on the internal layout to ensure the facilities meet the needs of all users. We have already identified a number of sustainability benefits which are a key part of our commitment to make the council and wider district carbon neutral.
As construction for the centre continues at pace, we look forward to engaging with our partners, local residents and community groups to ensure we deliver outstanding programmes and facilities for all members of the community to enjoy. It will be the key platform for the ongoing development of sport and leisure for all in Winchester and district.
We’re now working closely with our chosen provider, Everyone Active, to ensure they develop a health and wellbeing programme tailored to the needs of each individual using the centre, in readiness for the 2021 opening.
