A scout from Winchester, who was granted a wish last year, has become one of the 10 young people recruited to children’s charity Make-A-Wish UK ‘s new advisory board as part of its aspiration to become a child-led organisation by 2021.
Jacob Green, 13, joins STARboard with hopes to use his own experience to improve the wishgranting process and help other children see their wish come true. He was selected to represent the South East region on STARboard following a two-step application and interview process.
Jacob, who has battled with brain tumours, was granted his wish to visit Florida with his family in October 2019. During his time there Jacob enjoyed visits to Disneyland, Universal Studios, and the NASA Space Centre.
STARboard’s primary role is to be the voice of wish children. Each member will represent their region and fellow wish children to help Make-A-Wish better serve its communities.
Jacob will be involved in the first meeting of STARboard on 16th May but because of social distancing, the group, who are all aged between 13 and 20, will meet online.
At least two further meetings are planned this year to ensure that the child is always at the heart of all that the organisation does, with activities focusing on improving the wish experience, fundraising, events and working with communities.
I am so pleased to be a part of STARboard. I am keen to meet other young people who have been, or are in, a similar position to me and to help Make-A-Wish in its wishgranting pursuits.
Make-A-Wish Chief Executive Jason Suckley said:
Every day, the lives of 15 families in the UK are changed forever when their child is diagnosed with a serious illness. Medical appointments become the utmost priority with the innocence of childhood and simple family pleasures taking a backseat. Having a wish provides something positive on the horizon that they can look forward to and we feel it’s vital that young people are at the centre of making those wishes as brilliant and memorable as they can possibly be. That’s why we’re so pleased to have recruited 10 former wish children to our new STARboard panel. I’m looking forward to working with them.
