This year, Vigo Primary School launched a school wide competition for children across KS1 and KS2 to design a Christmas poster to spread some festive cheer in the local community.
The idea being that during the Christmas holidays while the children are off school they can participate in a scavenger hunt to see how many of the 30 posters they can find. Although, this was a Vigo competition we invited all children in the community to take part of they wish.
With nation lockdowns and children missing so much school over the past year, the children of Vigo Primary wanted to make sure that everyone within the local area could join in with spreading some joy and festive fun. They teachers received many uplifting and warming designs but could only choose one winner. The lucky winner with a fabulous design was Lena Chamska in Year 4.
The school had 30 copies of Lena’s poster professionally printed by Andover Printing and have been kindly supported by many local cafes, restaurants and shops within the community which have displayed the poster in their front windows. Businesses include: The Buddha, Jason and Cousins, B&M, Wetherspoons, Zintinos, Austin Hawk, J4K, Finkley Down Farm, Tot City, Pop up Christmas market, Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s. The poster was first published at Starbucks Andover on Friday 4th December where the friendly manager Imogen gifted Lena a free hot chocolate and goodie bag. The school have been overwhelmed by the support of the local community and look forward to also sharing other festivities within the community.
The children have been busy preparing a makaton Christmas signing concert, where a compilation of 7 Christmas songs have the children signing in their festive attire. This is being recorded and edited then sent o to 9 local nursing homes to let the residents know that we haven’t forgotten them and in times where we cannot visit them personally they can still enjoy some festive entertainment.
Choir teacher Louise Weymouth commented:
The children didn’t like the thought of any residents feeing lonely or disconnected from the community this year so we decided to put the concert together to spread some happiness in their home.
