University of Winchester Adult Nursing

University of Winchester asks local community: what qualities do you want to see in Winchester Nursing graduates?

The University of Winchester is inviting members of the local community to have their say and help shape the education of a new generation of nurses.

In September 2019, the University is launching an undergraduate BN (Hons) Nursing (Adult) degree, subject to approval from the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The course is the first in a suite of new nursing programmes, which will see highly-skilled and much sought-after graduate nurses, specialising in caring for adults, graduating from Winchester.

On Wednesday 21 November, the University is hosting a special consultation event in the city to find out from members of the public what qualities they believe would make a good ‘Winchester’ nurse.

We want to work with our healthcare partners, service users and the public to gather opinion about what values and attributes they would like to see in Winchester nursing graduates, said Wayne Arnett, senior lecturer, Nursing, at the University. We will try to build these views into University Nursing courses, to make sure we are educating nurses in a way that reflects public opinion.

Ian Winkworth, senior lecturer, Nursing, added:

Nursing in the UK has reached a critical point; with a shortage of staff to fill posts there is an increasing demand to produce more registered nurses. The University’s nursing programmes aim to create caring and compassionate nurses who put the needs of the patient first and are able to deliver and lead adult care within today’s ever-changing health and social care environment.

Also under discussion will be how to achieve the educational standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in innovative ways that will be best for students, practice partners and the public.

The special consultation event takes place on Wednesday 21 November from 6-8pm at 103-104 High Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9AH (behind The Ivy Brasserie).

All are welcome. The event is free to attend but please email NursingAdmin@winchester.ac.uk to book a place.
