This month Theatre Royal Winchester was granted Arts Award Centre status.
The highly regarded accreditation means that the theatre is now a hub for children and young people seeking support in their journeys to become and grow as artists and art leaders, and it will inspire them to take part in, and connect with, the wider arts world.
Theatre Royal Winchester champions young people in the arts, and now, as an Arts Award Centre, it will implement and support the Arts Award programme of levels and qualifications, which encourages children from aged 5, to young adults of 25, to take part in arts and crafts, create and share with others their own artwork – including performance pieces, research artists and craftspeople, review events, plan, lead, and share with others larger art projects.
The theatre has two trained Arts Award advisers, Engagement Producer, Katrina Henderson, and Young Theatre Royal Leader and Engagement Officer, Chanele Sillince, who will support and assess children and young people as they work through the Discover, Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold awards available.
Head of Creative Learning, Jo Wright, said:
Welcoming young people, children and their families to Theatre Royal Winchester and Hat Fair is always a delight, and we’re so pleased to be able to add Arts Award to what we can offer. Not only can young people continue to experience, enjoy and create great art with us, but now they can gain a qualification whilst they do!
Arts Award aims to develop and assess arts-related and transferable skills, such as creativity, communication, planning and teamwork.
