Winchester’s Waynflete Singers present their annual feast of the season on Saturday 8 December at 7.30pm in Winchester Cathedral. This year they are accompanied by the dazzling sound of Onyx Brass and the Cathedral will ring to the rafters with this festive celebration of choral and brass music.
They will perform Handel’s Coronation Anthems including the ever popular ‘Zadok the Priest’ and these will be interspersed with Gabrieli’s thrilling brass Canzonas, music which is tailor-made for the cathedral acoustic. Heinrich Schütz’s mighty setting for double choir of Psalm 100, Jauchzet dem Herrn concludes the first half. John Rutter’s Gloria provides a jubilant opener for the second half, and is followed by a selection of Christmas carols for both choir and audience, including Silent Night, marking the 200th anniversary of the first performance of this perennial favourite.
Onyx Brass celebrate their 25th anniversary this year and BBC Music Magazine describes them as “easily the classiest brass ensemble in Britain”. Once again the Cathedral’s Director of Music, Andrew Lumsden, will conduct and George Castle, Assistant Director of Music, will provide organ accompaniment.
The Cathedral’s Christmas Market and Ice Rink will be in full swing in the adjacent Cathedral Close adding to the atmosphere and excitement of this Christmas event.
This will be the Waynflete Singers’ 48th Christmas Concert . They have a strong reputation both locally and nationally for their highly polished and well-rehearsed concerts accompanied by professional ensembles and orchestras. They are currently commissioning a work to help them celebrate their forthcoming 50th Anniversary in 2020. You can follow them on their website www.waynfletesingers.org.uk where you will find details of future concerts together with how to audition, and also how to join as a ‘friend’ of the choir.
