Following yesterday’s announcement by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, when he spoke about Governments plans of a phased easing of lockdown restriction, some shops may be able to reopen as early as 1st June, just 3- weeks away.
BID is encouraging retailers to plan NOW for a safe re-opening. Some Andover high street businesses have already started, and others have in fact been able to open throughout the pandemic or have been able to adapt or change their business model. It has very much dependent on whether they are classed as food or essential services.
Steve Godwin, BID Manager says:
As far as BID is concerned, the PM’s announcement yesterday is welcomed and although we know that life is likely to be very different, we are looking forward to an to seeing a phased return to business and to urge businesses to take action now if they haven’t already done so. There is some good advice available about how to do this safely and to maintain social distancing in premises so contact us if we can help in any way. Although we know how difficult this is likely to be for many companies, hopefully the good weather during the summer is going to with us and that will help. People seem to want to be able to return to the high street and with many of our businesses being creative and entrepreneurial, I have no doubt that businesses will rise to this challenge and will be supported by the people of our town. We need to acknowledge however that everything is dependent on infection levels remaining low, so we do have to be careful.
The return to business for the Hospitality industry is likely to be difficult but again, with yesterday’s announcement indicating that a phased return may be possible from 1st July, it is an opportunity for our pubs, restaurants, bars and cafes to start planning as I know many have already doing so. More guidance for the hospitality sector will be available soon and BID will ensure that communication is made with our members as soon as possible.
