‘Sensory Experiences’ for People living with Dementia and their Carers/Relatives

Early in 2019, members of Greenbuttercup CIC proposed starting a new social/activity group for people living with Dementia and their carers/relatives. The aim was that for six months, there would be a monthly, two-hour session with a different ‘theme’ each time. Participants would be given the opportunity to experience the theme through as many of the senses as possible. The emphasis was to be solely on enjoying the experience, and the sessions would include scope for not only reminiscence, but also the opportunity to create ‘new’ memories for the accompanying relative/carer.

We were successful in securing funding from the TVBC Councillor Community Fund and the Romsey & Chandlers Ford Round Table for the trial period, and began the sessions in February. During the six months, we held the following ‘Sensory Experiences’ in the Green Room of the Plaza Theatre: Theatre/1980s; Cinema/Local history; Flight/Wartime; Seaside; and Music & Words; and had a visit to the Romsey Signal Box. For all but one of the sessions, we either had outside organisations to lead the session, or to lend us artefacts/films etc.

Upon review, and with additional funds from the Round Table, it was decided to continue with the sessions, and during the latter part of the year ‘Folk’ ‘Local Heritage’ and ‘Sport’ and ‘Christmas’ Sensory Experiences have taken place. We have a varied programme arranged to start 2020 including ‘Music’, ‘Transport’, and ‘Health & Exercise’.

Most of the sessions are held on the third Friday of the month from 10.30am – 12.30pm in the Green Room at the Plaza Theatre in Romsey – although we have, on occasion, met elsewhere. The venue is fully accessible, and there is parking available behind the Theatre. Entry is via the side door, up the ramp. There is a charge of £3 per person, which includes all activities and refreshments. The sessions are open to anyone with a Dementia, so if you know someone who may enjoy this, please bring them along.

You are welcome to just turn up, or if you want further information about this and/or the ‘Art & Craft’ sessions we run on the first Friday of the month, please contact Pamela on: 01794 501605 or
