Romsey Market Place improvements move to Church Street

As part of Hampshire County Council’s improvements to Romsey’s Market Place, resurfacing work is set to begin on 24 June.

Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council and Executive Member for Environment and Transport, said:

With town centres at risk across the county, we are investing in Romsey for the future. It is good to see the work in Market Place is coming along apace.

The main element of the Market Place improvements is the large piazza style build out that encompasses the current Lord Palmerston Statue within the middle of Market Place to provide a new space for public events. The materials being used are complementary to the historic town centre.

The scheme has been designed to create a safer environment for all road users including pedestrians and cyclists. It is the third and final phase of a wider improvement scheme for the historic market town.

The resurfacing work will take approximately five days to complete and will require a temporary road closure in Church Street at its junction with Market Place so disruption can be minimised by completing the work as quickly as possible.

The closure will allow resurfacing works to be carried out between the Conservative Club through to the junction with Bell Street. During these works, there will also be short term closures in place for The Abbey and Bell Street which should be between two to four hours. Businesses will be notified of these closures in advance.

All businesses will remain open as usual, with pedestrian access to Church Street and Market Place maintained throughout the works. The County Council will endeavour to keep disruption to businesses, residents and visitors to a minimum during the works.

A signed diversion for traffic will be in place and is available here

The current improvement scheme at Market Place is the third and final part of a £3 million package of measures in Romsey which includes improvements to Church Street, completed in 2016 and to Bell Street last year.

Subject to weather and ground conditions, the Market Place works are expected to be completed later this summer.
