Navy Catering Day

Navy Chefs cook up a high seas storm at Harrow Way Community School

Logo.HarrowwayRoyal Navy chefs put military cooking centre stage during a recent trip to Harrow Way  School. The three chefs from the Navy Careers team spent the day inspiring the School’s Hospitality and Catering students with various culinary demonstrations while giving an insight into life on the high seas as a Navy chef.

Two of the chefs have previously cooked for the Queen and one has even competed in the Culinary Olympics. Students were therefore suitably impressed with their fine dining expertise as the chefs showcased their skills, passing on hints and tips on how to prepare restaurant standard food.

Commenting on the naval visit Design Technology Teacher Emma Law said:

“These were highly qualified chefs who demonstrated to the students that if you’re passionate about creating amazing food and considering a military career – you can, in fact, do both in the Navy. The chefs inspired the students producing an amazing dish of roasted duck with a blackberry sauce and seasonable vegetables – the students couldn’t wait to tuck in! They were also fascinated to hear the stories  of what life and a career is like in the Navy, from the salary that can be earned, the training involved, sporting opportunities and of course, the many countries visited.”

Having seen how the experts worked students were put through their culinary paces with a Ready Steady Cook challenge. Working with a wide selection of high-quality ingredients the Year 10s impressed the Navy chefs with some very high standards of cooking producing outstanding dishes including beef wellington, bread and butter pudding and chocolate lava cake.

Reflecting on the experience Mrs Law concludes:

“It was great to have such high-level chefs cooking in our teaching kitchens here at Harrow Way. It certainly gave our students food for thought and while encouraging them to raise the bar with regard to their own cooking skills it also showed them an alternative career path should they want to take their cooking to the next level, but not necessarily want to follow a traditional cooking path.”
