It’s May and everything in the garden will be growing quickly!
The combination of long daylight hours, moisture in the soil from a wet Spring and hopefully, some sunshine, will mean that not only the grass but most plants too will be growing well.
With two Bank Holidays in the month it’s a great time to get things looking their best for whatever you’ve got planned.
Green, Green Grass!!!
A greener and better lawn is typically right at the top of my customer’s wish list for their gardens, and now is a good time to improve things.
It’s not too late in the year to repair and overseed bare patches, and most lawns will benefit from a treatment of fertiliser/weed killer, ideally using a seed spreader to give an even coverage and best results.
With or without the fertilizer, the grass will need cutting regularly, at least every two weeks for most lawns.
Something to eat?
Even if you haven’t grown tomatoes from seed, you can buy small plants relatively cheaply and plant them on to bigger containers ready for tomatoes later in the summer. There’s still a chance of frost in May so ideally protect them in a greenhouse or conservatory for a few more weeks.
Lettuce and other salad crops are even easier, you can plant seeds now and within weeks be harvesting and eating young leaves, just check the packet instructions as some will need to germinate on a warm windowsill to get them started.
It’s not just the plants
With the warmer months now upon us, it’s time to empty out the shed or greenhouse and get the garden furniture and everything else cleaned and tidied up, let’s hope for a long hot Summer.
I can offer regular grass cutting and other garden maintenance services for those who either need some extra help or simply don’t have the time themselves.
