Bob Weighton Memorial Garden

Memorial Garden for Bob Weighton at Brendoncare Alton

Bob Weighton was the oldest man in the world until he passed away in May 2020, aged 112 years. Bob had lived independently in the one of the apartments at Brendoncare Alton for 24 years.

He was always keen on making wooden children’s toys, puzzles, windmills and furniture. His second bedroom in his apartment was dedicated to a workshop which he filled with spare wood and materials to make the wooden items which he sold for charity.

Natalie O’Toole, Domiciliary Care Supervisor at Brendoncare Alton, said:

Bob was a big part of Brendoncare Alton and we wanted to organise a garden in his memory. Bob used to enjoy making his wooden windmills and we wanted to include one in the garden to commemorate his life. We couldn’t find a wooden version anywhere so Pauline Phillips, Senior Carer, at the care home spoke with her father and he came to the rescue!

Pauline Phillips commented:

I bought one of Bob’s windmills for my father, Brian Oakley, a few years ago. When he heard the story he offered to painstakingly take the windmill part to get the measurements to make a new windmill for the commemorative garden. We are all absolutely delighted with the finished product, he has done Bob proud!

Brendoncare Alton is run by Winchester-based charity, The Brendoncare Foundation, and provides nursing care for 80 people, as well as specialist care for people living with dementia, including respite care. It has recently undergone a major refurbishment and boasts comfortable and modern accommodation across five households, each with its own facilities. A close care complex adjoins the home, providing the independence and security of home ownership, combined with access to the home’s many caring and communal facilities, giving peace of mind.
