Kit Malthouse Honours Armed Forces in Andover Remembrance

On Sunday (12th November), Kit Malthouse MP joined constituents to honour the memory of those killed defending the United Kingdom in the Armed Forces.

A century ago, hundreds of thousands of Britons were engaged in fighting in the First World War.

Autumn 2017 in particular marks the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele, one of the worst battles of the war. The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing at Ypres commemorates all those whose bodies were never recovered after the battles in this area.

Over a million soldiers from Britain and its colonies were killed over the course of the war and many more were injured in body and mind.

In recent years campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan have added a modern edge to our remembrance.

The North West Hampshire MP laid a wreath on behalf of Parliament at the service at St Mary’s Church, Andover alongside the Mayor of Test Valley councillor Carl Borg-Neal, veterans from the services, cadets, scout groups and other local dignitaries.

Remembrance Day is particularly important to Andover as home of Army Headquarters and to Members of Parliament in whose hands lies the decision to send the Armed Forces to war.

Speaking afterwards, Kit said:

The Armed Forces have an especially close connection to Andover and I am proud to have Army Headquarters in my constituency. All of us who live in freedom and security owe those who made the ultimate sacrifice an unpayable debt and Remembrance ceremonies demonstrate our gratitude. It is excellent that so many local people turned out for the service.
