Kindness matters more than ever in Mental Health Awareness Week (18-24 May)

This Mental Health Awareness Week (18-24 May) it is more important than ever to be kind to family, friends, neighbours and the vulnerable, says Hampshire County Council, as people continue to adapt to the pressures and restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Councillor Judith Grajewski, Hampshire’s Executive Member for Public Health, said:

Research shows that there is a deep connection between kindness and good mental health. It’s an antidote to loneliness for many people who are isolated. Local communities, the voluntary sector and individuals have responded to the coronavirus lockdown with tremendous acts of kindness towards those in need and to them we’d like to say a huge thank you. Let’s extend that kindness to everyone we meet as we can never know what is going on in people’s lives behind the public smile they may show. If there is anything you are able do to help others, then now is the time to reach out in whatever capacity you can.

Helping others, whether through small acts of kindness or a regular commitment to volunteering, is proven to be good for mental well-being. It can help reduce stress, improve your emotional well-being and even benefit your physical health.

For those who would like to explore the many volunteering opportunities available across the county, the Hampshire CVS Network offers lots of ways to get involved. Every Mind Matters offers tips and advice to help you look after your mental health and well-being.
