Kicking off the borough’s new leisure facilities

Test Valley Borough Council members joined representatives of the Football Association, Sport England and the Football Foundation to reopen the sports pitches at Knightwood Leisure Centre.

A three-year project to develop and improve the pitches at the centre, in Valley Park, was completed last week with the pitches to open to the public in the new year. Test Valley Borough Council contributed £50,000 towards the project, alongside the Football Foundation, Football Association and Sport England.

The refurbishments involved adding a new drainage system which means the pitches can now be enjoyed throughout the year by residents and members of St Francis Youth Football Club who train at the centre.

An event was held on Saturday morning to mark the unveiling of the pitches, with chief executive officer of the FA, Martin Glenn, visiting the leisure centre with members of the council.

The new pitches will be managed by Places Leisure as part of their management of the leisure contract with Test Valley Borough Council.

Community and leisure portfolio holder, councillor Tony Ward, said:

Watching youngsters training on the pitches and seeing the fruits of the project is wonderful. Test Valley Borough Council recognises how important it is to be able to provide high standard sports facilities up and down the borough, so this is something we are hugely proud of.

This project wouldn’t have been completed so soon without the help of our partners and we are very grateful for all their support. I’m sure Places Leisure will do a fantastic job in managing this new addition to the centre.

Valley Park councillor Alan Dowden attended the opening alongside MP for Romsey and Southampton North, Caroline Nokes.

It follows a number of other investment projects at the centre, which includes the recent addition of outdoor exercise equipment and a skate park. New pathway improvements are also underway at the centre.
