Home-Start Winchester’s fundraisers are heading off on a JOGLE (that’s John O’Groats to Land’s End and back) to raise badly-needed funds. Sponsored by IVC of Alresford, the event will start on May Bank Holiday Monday and run for two weeks.
The brainchild of Home-Start Senior Coordinator Liz Stannard, the charity’s trustees, volunteers and families will need to complete 2000 miles in 14 days with the aim of raising thousands of pounds for the family support charity which is facing a huge funding gap. However the challenge can be split into tiny sections so people can walk, run or cycle any part of the distance they choose in the comfort of their own community or their own front garden.
Due to the Covid-19 crisis all our fundraising events have had to be cancelled, said Liz and we need to find other ways to pile on the pounds!
Liz will be putting in the miles on foot while husband Tim, son Seb and daughter Mollie will be freewheeling on Hampshire’s roads. Meanwhile son Ben, who is in the Royal Marines, will be taking part at his military base.
We are asking people to get involved in any way they can – ride their bike, pound the streets or their treadmill, waddle round the garden or toddle round the park with the pushchair, but whatever distance they choose to help us reach our 2000 mile target will be their personal challenge, she said.
Also getting on his bike is John Cooper who uses a static bike as part of his rehab regime after a life-changing stroke in 2019. John is no stranger to fundraising for Home-Start having taken part in the London to Paris bike ride in 2011 for the charity. John is married to Home-Start Winchester Chair Liz Cooper who says:
Whilst John has made a good recovery from his stroke in June, his mileage will be considerably different from his previous cycling challenges. His target is 50 miles during the fortnight in half hour sessions although he hopes he will better this.”
We would like lots of people to get involved, said Liz Stannard. Register with me and let me know what you plan to do at email@example.com. We will keep everyone informed of the key milestones along the way. Please spread the word far and wide and ask your friends to join in by taking a hike, riding a bike or walking round the garden like Captain Tom. Whatever your age you can do something and please send us photos of you or your family in action.
