Hampshire urges residents to use good judgement and save lives

Hampshire County Council is urging residents and businesses to remember that the coronavirus restrictions and guidelines are designed to protect vulnerable people.

Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage, Councillor Seán Woodward, said:

Hampshire County Council urges residents and businesses to follow not only the regulations restricting trading and gatherings, but also the spirit of the guidance set out regarding the need for physical distancing during coronavirus. This is in place to protect us all, and the way we act on this can save lives.

For many people, and small businesses, following the guidance means making some sensible judgements. For example, our rights of way are becoming more important than ever, as a means of exercise and fresh air – but when narrow routes become busy, everyone is put at risk. This is the kind of situation where we need to think beyond the basic guidance, and avoid going to places where staying two metres apart from other people may prove difficult.

Meanwhile it has been inspiring to see businesses finding ways to continue trading without bringing people into contact with each other; this protects jobs, and helps people who value their services.

However, nothing can be more important than saving lives, and protecting those who care for our vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbours. If you are considering a business activity that is likely to bring people into contact with other people – even if you think the regulations may technically allow it – we strongly urge you to consider the risks, and remember that many people have the virus without even knowing.

We have all been given clear guidance on how to minimise the risk of contracting coronavirus and passing it on the vulnerable members of our communities. But this unprecedented situation also requires a degree of responsible decision-making and judgement from all of us. Please help save lives by thinking through your activities very carefully beforehand.
