Gift of music for the people

Gift of music for the people of Hampshire

A beautifully bound copy of a symphony written especially for Hampshire, has been gifted to Hampshire County Council’s former Leader, Councillor Roy Perry, by its composer and the Head of the Romanian Honorary Consulate in Winchester – Calin Huma.

The presentation followed the premiere performance of the score by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Winchester Cathedral, earlier in May. While delighted to be given ‘Symphony Number 2 To Hampshire‘, on his final day of office, Councillor Perry took the opportunity to entrust the specially composed symphony to the County Council’s safekeeping on behalf of the county’s residents.

Councillor Perry said:

I felt privileged and honoured to have been given the symphony and to accept it on behalf of the people of Hampshire. However, it is right and proper that it should remain under the guardianship of the County Council’s Music Service for posterity.

Calin Huma came from the Romanian province of Moldova to live in Hampshire 25 years ago. In representing the Romanian Government, his role was to work with and learn from Hampshire County Council and help Romania in developing its own system for local government. Since then he has continued to represent Romania and forge economic and social connections in a spirit of bilateral co-operation.

Explaining why he composed the symphony and wanted to present it to the County Council, Calin said:

Living in Winchester and working across the county of Hampshire, there is so much that has inspired me and prompted me to write this piece of music. I have not trained as a composer but since writing my first symphony in 2015, I have got better and better. Ever since I arrived in the county, I have felt welcomed by everyone who lives here and I consider this to be my adopted home. For this reason, I wanted to give something back in gratitude for the help and support I have received.

Taking receipt of this unique body of work, on behalf of the County Council’s Music Service, was Carl Clausen, Director of the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra (HCYO).

On receiving the symphony, Mr Clausen commented:

I am delighted to receive this interesting and uplifting score and I will ensure that this exclusive and special piece of music is kept safely, and care is taken to keep the bound copy preserved in mint condition.

An inscription, from Mr Huma, embossed in one of the opening pages of the bound score reads:

To my adoptive land and its people. Please receive this music as a symbol of my deep appreciation for everything you are. With warmest compliments, from myself and the Romanian community to Hampshire.

The premiere of Mr Huma’s symphony, orchestrated by Christopher Petrie, was performed on 3 May 2019
