Feeling the cold at home? Households in need invited to apply for heating checks

Winchester City Council is working with low carbon sector leader Agility Eco, on their LEAP scheme (Local Energy Assistance Programme), which aims to provide free energy surveys to low-income households or those suffering from fuel poverty.

The scheme supplies eligible households with a free home visit to provide energy efficiency advice. Agility Eco and LEAP Home Energy Advisors help residents with identifying energy-wasting products in the house and replacing them with energy efficient alternatives such as; radiator panels, chimney balloons, LED light bulbs and more.

Despite nationwide COVID-19 restrictions LEAP’s services continue via telephone where residents can access expert energy advice, help with checking their energy tariffs or support with energy suppliers.

Since 2013 Agility Eco has helped over 36,000 low-income households and partnered with 45 local authorities and social landlords, to provide LEAP to eligible residents in their neighbourhoods.

Cllr Lynda Murphy, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, said:

We are delighted to offer support to the most vulnerable members of our community through our partnership with Agility Eco to make houses more energy-efficient. As our ambitious plans to become a carbon-neutral district by 2030 near this is one way we can take a step closer to meet our ground-breaking target.

Now, more than ever, we must look after those who need support, care and compassion, and the LEAP scheme is just one way we can provide this. As we move into the winter months we understand the difficult times ahead for some households, we hope the scheme can help relieve some of the pressure.

If your household is struggling to afford to heat your home, are receiving Tax Credits, Housing Benefit, or have a long term illness or disability LEAP are available to help.
