Tree Planting 2019

Andover take up your spade and get planting for National Tree Week!

logo.Andover Trees UnitedNational Tree Week (23rd November – 1st December) marks the start of the winter tree planting season and is the UK’s largest annual celebration of trees.

Andover Trees United began their annual planting fortnight last Monday and are currently supporting 1000 local school children to add their trees to Harmony Woods; a community woodland on the out-skirts of Andover, which was started in 2012.

Alex Walker from Portway Junior School, one of twenty-seven partner schools helping to plant the wood, thanked the Andover Trees United team for a brilliant Friday morning saying that the children were positively ‘buzzing’ after their morning in the wood.

Planting trees is a great way to help sequester carbon emissions as trees absorb carbon dioxide to produce the oxygen we breathe. The National Tree Council estimate the UK needs to plant 30,000 hectares per year for the next 30 years to combat climate change.

By ensuring that the trees planted are native British species we can also help to preserve the UK’s environment and protect biodiversity. However, to make the challenge harder, UK trees are threatened by many diseases such as the current Ash Dieback and Dutch Elm disease which, 40 years ago, eradicated Elm trees from the British Landscape. However, thanks to a National Tree Council grant, Andover Trees United schools are reintroducing this much-loved tree and are currently planting 25 disease-resistant Elm trees at Harmony Woods.

Volunteers from the local community and Andover businesses were joined by Phil North, leader of Test Valley Borough Council who said:

It was great to join pupils from local schools to help plant the next section of woodland between Augusta Park and Enham Alamein. Planting trees doesn’t just create fantastic landscapes which is important for biodiversity, it is absolutely vital in tackling climate change. My thanks go to Wendy Davis and all at Andover Trees United for all they do in planting and maintaining this amazing woodland.

The British Army have also been up at the woodland with their boots and spades helping the children plant trees for a greener future. Gemma Regniez from The British Army Communications Team said:

Our team had a fantastic morning helping out; it’s a great opportunity to use our volunteering days. We’re encouraging more of our colleagues to take part!

National Tree Week is an opportunity for everyone to get involved in planting trees so if you would like to join Andover Trees United and volunteers why not email them at volunteers@andovertrees.org
