Wizard of Oz Rehearsals

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

If you aren’t aware of the existence of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ then you have probably been living on Mars for the last one hundred and sixteen years. Written by L. Frank Baum and originally published in May 1900 under the title ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ it had a similar impact on the children of the time as the Harry Potter series has had on contemporary young people. In 1902 it was adapted as a Broadway Musical and then in 1939 came the film, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ starring Judy Garland as Dorothy. Now a staple of the Christmas television schedules ‘The Wizard of Oz’ must have been seen by millions of children who have watched in wonder as Dorothy is blown away from Kansas by a tornado into the strange land of Oz. How she then befriends a Lion, a Scarecrow and a Tin Man and joins with them to free the land of Oz from tyranny of the Wicked Witches is a story that has achieved legendary status.

Now an exciting new adaptation has come to Andover. Local teacher and writer, Graeme Fluellen has adapted the story for the Andover Community Theatre and in doing so has created a version for a modern audience. Don’t worry though, all the familiar elements of the story are there but enhanced by the presence of songs drawn from the rich culture of popular music.

Graeme himself, in addition to writing the piece, is directing and appearing in the show in the role of Tin Man. Popular local actor and musician, Dave Allon plays the Lion and Paul Moulding brings his comic acting skills to the role of Scarecrow. In the part of Dorothy is Leanne Cosgrove who also is acting as co-director and producer.

January is always a time of anti-climax coming after the excitement of Christmas and New Year, so the Andover Community Theatre have decided to perform their show in January to help bring some relief to the dark winter.

Performances are to be held at Harrow Way School on 19th & 20th January, beginning at 7.30pm. Tickets, which are £5 (full), £3 (concessions) and £15 (family 2+2) are on sale from The Lights Theatre box office, telephone 01264 368368 or by visiting The Lights Theatre web site and booking online.

This is indeed a great way to relieve your post Christmas blues.
