Professional dancers hold workshop at Winton Community Academy

On Tuesday 22nd May Year 8, 9 and 10 GCSE dance students had the opportunity to work with 5 professional dancers. The workshop was led by Lynne Paige.

Lynne Paige is a choreographer who works in Film, Tv, Music, Musicals, Plays and Opera. In 2010 she was nominated for a Tony award, a Drama Desk award and an Olivier award for her work on the West End and Broadways La Cage Aux Folles. In film she has worked for Warner Brothers and Working Title as a movement director and choreographer. On stage, credits include extensive work for London’s West End, the Royal National Theatre, The Royal Shakespeare Company and Broadway. She also works commercially with The Pet Shop Boys, Ellie Goulding, Burberry and Stormzy.  Students took part in a warm up led by Julie who has danced with James Cousins Company and much more. The warm up put students through their paces testing their floor work and contact.

After this, students were split into two groups half went with Mary and Tom who have recently finished a Tour dancing for The Pet Shop Boys traveling all over the world and now are currently working on an opera called Saul. The students learnt some of the repertoire from the production which was a physical embodiment of the voices of the singers. It requires the students to growl and shout at each other. The students then had to choreograph their own section inspired by the repertoire as if they were in battle with each other.

In the other workshop the students worked with Julie and Robin. Tom performed with Rambert Dance Company for 12 years and then Joined Matthew Bourne’s dance company New Adventures where he performed in the production Swan Lake. Robin taught the students the repertoire from Mathew Bournes’s  production of Swan Lake. The students found the choreography interesting but very challenging as it was classical ballet. After this the students created their own duets or trios in the same style showing the graceful movement of a swan.

Later on students were taught some of the choreography Lynne created for the tour of the Pet Shop Boys. This was a fun routine they all enjoyed.

At the end of the day parents, staff and students were invited to an open rehearsal of the students’ work. Miss Chloe Franklin (Dance teacher) said:

It was great to see all of the students having a go at something that was different and out of their comfort zone. They were very professional throughout the day, enjoyed it very much and they were very proud of themselves after their performance.
