Newly qualified nurses honoured at annual badge ceremony

NEWLY-QUALIFIED nurses and midwives who carried out their training at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust got the chance to celebrate their achievements at a special ceremony.

A total of 23 nurses and midwives marked their graduation from students to qualified staff at the Trust’s annual badge ceremony, which was held at The Ark, Basingstoke. 63 nurses and midwives have recently graduated after completing their training with the Trust.

Every year, Hampshire Hospitals presents graduates from the University of Surrey, University of Southampton, Bournemouth University and The Open University, as well as nurses returning to practice, with a Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust badge that they will wear on their uniform for the rest of their career to show with pride where they trained.

Julie Dawes, chief nurse at Hampshire Hospitals, which runs Andover War Memorial Hospital, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and Royal Hampshire County Hospital, in Winchester, hosted the event.

She said: I am delighted to be here to celebrate this remarkable achievement and am very proud of each of the student nurses and midwives who trained in our hospitals. We hope that our newly qualified staff continue to wear their badge and uniform with pride and remember the valuable lessons they learned as part of their training at our Trust as they progress in their careers.

A group of overseas nurses from United Arab Emirates were also celebrated for passing the Objective Structure Clinical Examination (OSCE), which recognises them as registered nurses in the UK and bridges the gap between their training overseas.

Julie added:

It is also wonderful to celebrate some of the new members of our team at Hampshire Hospitals who have joined us from overseas. It takes a diverse range of people to care for our community and we must recognise the achievement of passing their exams to become part of our team.

As well as their families, friends and colleagues, the graduates were also joined by The worshipful the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Councillor Sean Keating, The Right worshipful the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Frank Pearson and Mrs Anne Pearson and The Mayor of Test Valley, Cllr Mayor-Elect Ian Carr and Mayoress, Mrs Beryl Carr.

One of the newly qualified nurses celebrated at the special event was 24 year old Aimee Gilbert, who studied at University of Southampton and has secured a job at the Trust working in the isolation ward at Basingstoke hospital.

Aimee said:

I always knew that I wanted to work in care, and after working in a care home I decided to make the leap to become a registered nurse and I have loved it every step of the way. I really enjoyed all of my placements, but Basingstoke felt really special to me so I am so glad I can carry on my journey here as a registered nurse.

I am so proud of what we have all achieved and it’s great to be able to celebrate here together. There were some challenging moments but the staff at the Trust have all been so friendly and supportive and I’m excited about my future here.

A number of special awards were announced on the night, with The Taverner Award for the exceptional student nurse of the year going to Madeleine Rose, who has begun her career in community nursing in Alton after graduating.

Madeleine said:

I feel really honoured to have won this award and am really excited to start my career. I can’t thank the staff at the hospital in Winchester enough for how they have supported me during my placements, I’ve met so many amazing nurses and I am really looking forward to being the best nurse I can be.

Other award winners were Candita Wootten, who claimed the Student Midwife of the Year award, Jon Mason, who was named Nurse Mentor of the Year, and Jess Lorrain, who won the Midwife Mentor of the Year prize.
