New affordable homes at Swanmore

A corner plot of surplus garden land owned by Winchester City Council has enabled the construction of two new affordable homes in Springvale, Swanmore.

Not only are the new three bed homes built to a high standard of energy efficiency but the properties also include a water butt and composter in the garden. The homes are built using the lifetime home principles, meaning that they are flexibly and generously designed to meet residents current and future needs.

Cllr Caroline Horrill, the City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing, said:

Kiln Cottages is an excellent example of how the Council is able to provide new, affordable homes for rent through making best use of their land.

This site was visible from New Road as unmaintained garden land and is now a pair of carefully designed cottages which complement the street scene. The properties are ideally located for families being close to schools and community facilities. The lucky new residents will also have reduced fuel bills due to the photovoltaic panels and the high level of energy efficiency in the build fabric overall.

Planning permission was granted for the homes in January 2015. Mapledean Developments Ltd was appointed as contractor in summer 2015 and will complete the new homes for the Council at the end of March 2016.
These new homes are part of the Council’s ambitious programme to provide 300 new council homes in the District. New council homes are allocated through Hampshire Home Choice.
