‘Lord of the Flies’ Open audition at The Lights – boys needed

Fair Play Performing Arts, resident youth theatre school at The Lights, will soon be holding open auditions for a production of ‘Lord of the Flies’, adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams.

The auditions are open to boys between the ages of 8 and 19 and will take place at The Lights on Monday, 26 September between 6-8pm.

Prospective cast members should email the theatre school directly at fairplayarts@gmail.com to arrange an audition time and to receive an extract of the script to prepare in advance.

Based on the classic novel by William Golding, the play is set in the midst of a raging war. When a plane evacuating a group of schoolboys from Britain is shot down over a deserted tropical island, the surviving boys battle the temptations of savagery along with their fear of a mythical beast roaming the island.

Director Kevin Hession explains his reasons for choosing to stage the production separate from the theatre school’s weekly classes at The Lights;

The whole point is to get local boys and teenagers involved with the theatre and get them rehearsing and performing on the stage. A play like this appeals to boys sense of freedom and adventure.

The characters are a little more real than those you often find in plays intended for young casts. They’re more rough-edged.

We’ve worked with many talented boys in theatre over the years and many of them would never have got into acting had it not been for opportunities like this. We want boys in Andover to know that there is a place for them on stage and it’s theirs for the taking.

Rehearsals for the production will take place on Monday evenings (6-7.30pm) at The Lights and will include a weekly rehearsal fee of £8 per actor. The show will be performed on Tuesday, 28 February 2017.
