London to Brighton Start

Local man plans to drive from the ‘Big Smoke’ to ‘London-by-the-sea’ in aid of Cancer Research UK

Local man, Darrell Cunningham plans to take part in this year’s 2016 London to Brighton Classic Car Run on the 5th JUNE in a 1939 Standard Flying 8 Tourer. All funds raised by his entry will go to Cancer Research UK.

Including the journey to the start from his home near King Somborne, he will be doing approx 250+ miles at an average speed of 30 MPH opened topped all the way. He will be driving a 1939 Standard Flying 8 tourer (one of about 14 known to be still mobile in the world) It has cable brakes, one wiper, 3 gears, 6 volt lighting and no modern luxuries such as safety belts, heater, radio, SAT NAV.  So look out for NO 8 on route!

Darrell has raised money for various cancer charities over the years. Members of his family and friends have suffered with different forms of the disease. Back in 2000, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent surgery resulting in a successful outcome which helped him to beat Cancer. Shortly afterwards he had a Stroke which left him with mobility problems that will affect him for life, but he has no regrets as having the operation saved his lifeDarrell is a classic car enthusiast and is the Publicity Officer for The Standard Club International and Organiser for The New Forest Group which welcomes all makes of Classic cars to its Drive it Day event each year in April. Darrell also in his spare time writes stories about Stan and Topper the Scarecrow again for charity.

Speaking about the forthcoming event, Darrell said;

With being personally affected by Cancer and my interest in Classic Motoring, this challenge draws upon both my passion for driving older classic vehicles and raising money for Cancer Research UK. I am hoping any funds will help them to build a brand new research facility Francis Crick Institute at the heart of London that will help beat cancer sooner. Please support this worthwhile Charity and it’s good work.

At the young age of 69 I will be driving my classic car called Stan 77 year’s old open topped! I will have a web cam fitted to the dash board to film the run. Thank You to Stephen Smith of GE Classic Events for very kindly donating a place in the 2016 London to Brighton Classic Car Run. Also the members of the Standard Motor Club for their advice, help, engineering and above all patience. Especially Brian Parkes, Alan Tibot & Dave Salter
