Andover Leisure Centre staff got into the Bake Off spirit to raise money for Macmillan Charity Support and to celebrate the life of a colleague and friend who died of cancer last year.
All of the cakes on sale at the recent charity coffee morning were made by the leisure centre staff and were judged in a ‘Great British Bake Off’ style competition.
Standing in as replacements for Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood were Sarah Lovejoy from Valley Leisure and Mercedes Macdonald, the widow of Heath Macdonald, a fitness instructor at Andover Leisure Centre who died of cancer last year.
Ben Thambipillai, assistant manager sport and activity at Andover Leisure Centre, was the winner with his showstopper Land Rover cake, complete with Valley Leisure logo and edible canoe boats.
Today’s bake off was a bit of fun but it was for a good cause too. It was a pleasure having Mercedes come and judge our cakes, ” said Sarah Lovejoy, assistant manager front of house.
Her husband, Heath, wasn’t just a colleague, he was also a friend to everyone that worked here and raising money for a charity that is close to both Mercedes and her family is really important to all of us here at Andover Leisure Centre, she added.
A total of £103 was raised from cake and coffee sales during the day.
