Leading artists explore faith and belief through art

The Lovell Interfaith Lecture 2016, jointly hosted by the University of Winchester and Winchester Cathedral, brings together two leading British artists to discuss the artistic interpretation of Christian and Islamic beliefs.
In Beyond Depiction, Islamic pattern maker Adam Williamson and Christian artist Sophie Hackett will each present their work and discuss together how it expresses their faith and influences them. Their discussion will be followed by a Q and A session with the audience.
Award-winning artist Adam Williamson is a leading specialist in geometric and biomorphic art (Arabesque) and founded the Art of Islamic Pattern, which offers courses and educational tours. He is also a skilled stone/wood carver and has been commissioned by HRH the Prince of Wales, Oxford University, Shakespeare’s Globe London, Kew Gardens and Westminster Abbey.
Sophie Hacker is an artist, teacher and arts consultant for Winchester Cathedral. She is a trustee of Arts Christianity Enquiry (ACE). Her work is primarily abstract and symbolic and expresses her Christian faith. As an adult educator, she enables others to reflect on the relationship between art, Christian faith and spirituality, and encourages them to use art to explore their own vision, values and beliefs.
The University of Winchester and Winchester Cathedral co-host the annual Lovell Interfaith Lecture Series which aims to draw people together in appreciation of diversity and spirituality. Founded in 1840 as the Winchester Diocesan Training School, the University embraces spirituality as one of its values, welcoming people of all faiths and none and aims to explore the mystery of life and to grow in wisdom and love.
The Lovell Interfaith Lecture Beyond Depiction takes place at 7pm on Monday 10 October at Winchester Cathedral, 9 The Close, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9LS. It will be preceded by an interfaith reception at the West End at 6.30pm. Both the Lecture and the reception are free to attend – please book by emailing canons.pa@winchester-cathedral.org.uk
