It’s not too late to get a uni place – as the race to ‘clearing’ begins

As thousands of local students get their A level results and the race to ‘Clearing‘ begins, Sparsholt College is ensuring that anyone who has changed their minds about which university they want to go to, or who didn’t quite get the grades they needed for their first choice can get a fast response to their questions and can still join the many specialist degree courses on offer at the land-based college outside Winchester.

Sparsholt’s Dean of Higher Education, Dr Barbarita Coulson said;

As a specialist land based college we are in a position to take late applications for most of our courses as we can extend our class sizes if needed. We are small enough to offer this flexibility, which also means students get a fantastic, personalised experience, working with some of the country’s leading experts in Fishery Studies, Animal and Zoo Management, Horticulture, Equine Studies and Conservation and Ecology.

Principal Tim Jackson said;

We are keen to ensure the local community are aware that it is not too late to apply as many think if they have missed the formal UCAS deadline in January they have to wait another whole year to apply. This is particularly relevant to many mature people who may not be in the ‘UCAS’ loop that school leavers are. Our team of advisers and tutors are on hand this week to offer advice to anyone who is thinking of studying an undergraduate or postgraduate degree

BSc (Hons) Ecology and Conservation Management student Ruth Holland applied late for her course after she attended an open day with her son who was looking for a college course. Formerly a secondary school sciences teacher Ruth was keen to follow her passion for wildlife and conservation by retraining.

She said;

When I decided that I wanted to go to Sparsholt to study the degree course it was long after the UCAS deadline so I thought I would have to wait for another year. That was not the case at all – I was able to submit my application directly and start the course in the September.

All Higher Education courses at Sparsholt are validated by the University of Portsmouth and the Vice Chancellor Professor Graham Galbraith was the guest of honour at this year’s graduation ceremony in Winchester Cathedral, where he spoke about the value of a degree from Sparsholt and the contribution to the economy of training people with specialist skills.
