Autumn

Indian Summer or Early Autumn?

The mornings will be feeling cooler but in recent years September has generally given us a warm and dry month to extend the Summer – let’s see what this year brings us.

In many ways it’s a transitional month, a chance to enjoy the last of the warmer days outside, but also a good time to start getting the garden prepared for the months ahead.

If you’ve been growing tomatoes they should now be perfect for eating, you can also start picking apples and cut back your raspberry canes in preparation for next year.

As the growing season slows down it’s generally a good time to have a good clear up, cut back shrubs and  hedges and they will then stay tidy and less likely to be damaged by wind through the winter months.

The grass will not need cutting as frequently, however either this month or next an Autumn fertiliser treatment will give you the best chance of avoiding moss and weeds and protecting the grass.

It’s a good time of year to empty out the shed or garage and decide what’s worth keeping – if you have somewhere dry to store things then you can get great deals now on buying tools and furniture etc for next year!

I can offer regular grass cutting and general garden maintenance services for those who either need some extra help or simply don’t have the time themselves.  Monthly Garden Gazette tips are provided courtesy of RJ Garden Maintenance
