Harrow Way drive up standards with tough recruitment process

Following a new, tougher application process Harrow Way has announced the Student Leadership Team and prefects for 2018/19. Chloe Wilfort and Jed Trengrove have been appointed Head Girl and Head Boy with Indy Jones and Lord Odunlami as their deputies.

With a directive to reduce the number of prefects and a selection criteria which saw only students with outstanding behaviour and excellent attendance invited to apply, the process this year was particularly rigorous. Only 46 students were successful in their application, 19 of which were appointed as senior prefects.

Headteacher Michael Serridge explains the change in approach:

Prefects fulfil an important role in our school community and we feel that only those students with exemplary behaviour and attendance should be afforded the opportunity to apply. A key focus throughout Harrow Way is on driving up standards – from teaching and learning in the classroom to the way in which students conduct themselves. We were therefore keen to ensure that these high standards apply to all aspects of the school, including the application process for this year’s prefect team. It was a tough, rigorous process and I am confident that these successful candidates will have a positive influence throughout the school and will be ideal role models for other students to look up to.

Following their selection the new prefect team attended a bespoke training session at Norman Court. Delivered by four trainers from Lloyds Banking Group students took part in team building exercises and a workshop on communication skills. The trainee prefects also took part in either bush-craft skills or orienteering activities.

As Harrow Way’s Year 11 students now exclusively focus on their approaching GCSEs, the new team are prepared and ready to take up their new roles following the Easter break.
