Hampshire honours its young sporting stars

Young Hampshire sports stars from schools and colleges across the county have been recognised for outstanding achievement at the Hampshire Schools Sports Federation’s 27th annual Michael Austin Harlick Awards, organised with support from Hampshire County Council.

Commenting on the awards, Councillor Peter Edgar, Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Education, said:

The County Council aims to ensure that sporting opportunities are provided for all young people in its schools, and the awards given this year demonstrate what a wide range of sports young people have been inspired to learn, and even to excel in.

My congratulations go to all of this year’s winners for their fantastic achievements. The high standard of sporting talent we have seen at the awards is testament to the hard work of the young people, their coaches and their parents. It also highlights the value of having a county-wide Outdoor Education and Physical Education service, which can bring together young sportspeople from across a wide area.

At the special ceremony held on 10 November in Winchester, Alice Tai, Gold and Bronze Medallist at the Rio Paralympic Games, presented the winners with trophies to celebrate achievements in a variety of sports.

The Hampshire London 2012 Legacy Award, which recognises the voluntary work of an individual student who has made a significant contribution for the benefit of others in school physical education and sport, went to Ed Lewis, from Peter Symonds College in Winchester. Ed gives up a lot of his time voluntarily every week to coach volleyball to various groups and lead the volleyball team at his college, and has also organised an inter-college volleyball tournament for six colleges.

The Michael May Cup, for the most outstanding single performance of the year, was presented to Holly Mills from Hurstbourne Tarrant, for her Gold Medal win for Long Jump at the European Athletics Youth Championships.
The President’s Trophy, for the outstanding team performance of the season, went to the Hampshire Schools Intermediate Girls Heptathlon Team for their success at this year’s South East Schools combined event.
