Hampshire County Council responds to the Prime Minister’s plans for schools

Statement from Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Education, Councillor Peter Edgar:

Anything that improves opportunities for children from all backgrounds is to be supported. The Prime Minister is absolutely correct in her assertion that children from relatively poor backgrounds should have better access to high quality education. Our overriding principle, here in Hampshire, is that every young person matters.

I welcome the Government’s commitment to having diversity in the school system. In Hampshire, we have already encouraged the University of Winchester and the University of Chichester to play an active part in sponsoring schools and we are grateful for the work they are doing.

We will need to respond positively to the green paper and one of the elements that we’ll be looking for is that any new policy enables greater integration between all types of school and colleges. For our part, we would want to take a role in making sure that there is much greater flexibility in the age of transfer, especially at secondary level, so that those who need a change of emphasis in their course of education and learning are able to do so with ease.

In Hampshire, young people benefit from a high standard of secondary and post 16 education, enabling them to be very successful. We would want to see that level of provision continue without compromise.
