Hampshire County Council funding to give Broughton Village Hall a new lease of life to benefit Test Valley communities

Broughton Village Hall will be transformed with modern heating, lighting and insulation thanks to a £150,000 grant from Hampshire County Council.

The building will also be made more accessible for people with disabilities – all helping to reinforce the Hall’s position as the hub of the community.

Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, Councillor Andrew Gibson, recently met with Caroline Nokes, MP for Romsey and Southampton North, Broughton Village Hall Chair and Parish Councillor Graham Cowley and fellow Parish Councillor, Ed James, to hear of the improvement plans following the £150,000 grant from the County Council’s Community Buildings Capital Fund.

County Councillor Andrew Gibson, explained:

Broughton is one example of how rural communities are continuing to play a part in Hampshire’s economic growth and overall success. The grant will ensure Broughton Village Hall can run with reduced capital costs and attract more business, allowing the facility to thrive in a financially efficient and sustainable way.

Plans also include an extension for a new community room and space to house a historical archive, donated and funded by a local benefactor. The historical archive will contain papers, photos, watercolour paintings and artefacts, dating back to 1730.

Caroline Nokes MP said:

Village halls like Broughton’s are important community hubs which are valued by all who use them for a wide range of social activities. I am really pleased Broughton Village Hall will be modernised and look forward with interest, to visiting the archive room which will ensure that the area’s history remains alive and on display.

Additional funding has been provided by Test Valley Borough Council and Broughton Parish Council.

Village Hall Chair and Broughton Parish Councillor, Graham Cowle
y, explained:

We are giving a new lease of life to the village hall. The work will expand our opportunities and ability in making the village hall a more pleasant environment for village residents and visitors now, and for many years to come. We also have additional ideas in the pipeline for improving kitchen and storage facilities and for making the hall more accessible for larger functions too.

Chair of Broughton Parish Council, Ed James, added:

The funding is an opportunity for us and the community to benefit from upgraded facilities. An expansion of the hall will help mirror, and cater for, our expanding community.

Councillor Gibson approved Broughton Village Hall’s grant as part of over £570,000 of funding from the County Council for community halls and centres, with money also given to sites in Warsash, Winnall in Winchester and Rowner in Gosport.
