Food for thought

Creative children in the borough have until Friday, 9 June to submit entries into a drawing competition and win the chance to see their design displayed on a waste collection vehicle.

With figures showing that many families waste up to £700 of food every year, Test Valley Borough Council’s Environmental Service is asking local children to design a banner that will encourage people to think
differently about how they shop for food and make use of their leftovers. Keeping better control of food wastage could save families up to £60 per month, and simple tasks such as planning meals in advance
and freezing leftovers to keep them fresh can all help to reduce unnecessary waste.

Environmental Portfolio Holder, Councillor Graham Stallard, said:

This is our third Recycling Stars drawing competition and food waste is another important issue we’re keen to address. Children are very creative and always impress us with their colourful pictures, designs and slogans so I am looking forward to seeing how they approach the topic of food waste.

Two lucky winners will see their designs enlarged and displayed on a waste collection vehicle that will serve Test Valley. They will win £100 of books or equipment for their school as well as a £25 book token for themselves and some Recycling Stars goodies.

Full details about the competition, including the entry form, can be found at www.testvalley.gov.uk/recyclingstars where the winning designs will also be displayed after the competition closes.
