Environmentally-friendly surfaces reduce maintenance costs

Test Valley Borough Council has installed a new rubber surface in parts of two busy public areas of Andover to reduce maintenance costs and enhance the area’s overall appearance.

The rubber mulch surface is an environmentally-friendly material which is made from recycled tyres. The Council has laid the mulch in a part of Anton Mill car park and the bus station, and will use it in other areas of the borough if it proves effective. The durable nature of the material means that the areas will be kept tidy, level and safe because the material will not rot or blow away.

Planning Policy and Transport Portfolio Holder, Councillor Martin Hatley, said:

We are trialing the environmentally-friendly material in small areas in two public areas to see how well it embeds into the ground. The material is low maintenance and improves the overall look of the area.
