Dad we need to talk about the ‘Birds and the Bees’ !

Tables have turned in the new Prostate Cancer UK awareness advert ‘Ignoring Prostate Cancer won’t beat it’,  as we see a son sitting his Dad down to discuss the risks of prostate cancer and if diagnosed the problems it could cause with ‘Adult Nap Time’ ! The advert is the latest drive to inspire and grow our army of supporters, Men United, and will be shown on TV screens and cinemas across the UK to get the message out there to make men check themselves and raise the chances of potentially catching the disease in the early stages.

On the Prostate Cancer UK website the son says:

Contrary to my dad’s suspicions, when I’m surfing the internet for hours in my bedroom, I’m often looking at sites about men’s health. After granddad died recently from prostate cancer, I’ve been reading about the increased risk for men over 50 with a family history of the disease. I don’t say it often, but I love my dad and I can’t let him ignore the dangers of his prostate any longer. It’s time to stage an intervention, no matter how uncomfortable the subject matter.

While the Dad says:

I’m 50 and in the prime of my life, both personally and professionally. I’ve got a designated middle manager’s parking space at work, a membership at the local golf club, and the infirmities of old age are still a long way off yet. What’s there to worry about? Now if my son would just let me go for a round of golf with Dave, I can get on with working on my handicap.”

Ray Winstone, Charles Dance, Tamzin Outhwaite and John Simm join forces with us to help highlight the plight of men living with prostate cancer in a film called Father’s Day.  From 2013, the film still resonates and its themes – talking about prostate cancer and knowing your risk – are vitally important messages for men today.

Father’s Day is a fictional story, however the issues they face will ring true with men and their families of those diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prostate Cancer UK talks about the film ‘Who’s the Daddy this Fathers Day ?’ on their website.
