Compassion and dedication of staff celebrated during special WOW! lunch event

THE compassion shown by a healthcare assistant was celebrated during a special WOW! Awards lunch hosted by Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Judit Grill, who works in the antenatal clinic at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, was called in to help translate when a woman in labour was having difficulty communicating with midwives on the labour ward.

She said:

A Hungarian lady needed extra support communicating with the midwives. One of the midwives remembered that I was Hungarian and called for me to go up to the labour ward.

Judit did not hesitate to step in and ensured that the woman understood vital information about procedures and pain relief.

I was just pleased to be able to help the lady in any way I could because she was a bit anxious,” Judit explained. “She was really grateful when I saw her again after she had given birth and it was nice to know that I had made a difference for her.

I was really surprised when I heard I had been nominated for a WOW! Award, so I really couldn’t believe it when I was told that I had won.

Judit was one of many WOW! Award winners honoured for their hard work, dedication and care during the lunch event. Other winners included the safeguarding children team, who were nominated for their hard work on a particularly challenging case, while the estates team were nominated after refurbishing the maternity bereavement suite at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, in Winchester .

Kim Leitch, from the WOW! Awards, was on hand to present staff with their certificates. She also surprised staff from three departments with special presentations for reaching a landmark number of nominations.

Staff on The Candover Suite at Basingstoke hospital have now received 50 nominations, while staff working in the Women’s Health Unit at Basingstoke hospital and St Cross Ward at Winchester hospital have been nominated 100 times.

Staff can be nominated for a WOW! Award by their colleagues, patients or visitors throughout the year, with a handful of winners selected by the trust’s public governors each month.

Speaking at the lunch, Elizabeth Padmore, chairman of Hampshire Hospitals, which runs Andover War Memorial Hospital, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, in Winchester, said:

I’m so incredibly proud of all of you. I know a lot of you say that you are just doing your jobs, but it is doing your jobs so well that makes a massive difference to our patients. Thank you so much. You are all brilliant.
