Andover’s first session of the increasingly popular ‘Walking Football’ was a huge success !

Andover’s first session of Walking Football took place on the 12th January with The Worshipful Mayor of Test Valley, Cllr Iris Andersen in attendance to launch the new exercise classes for those with a love of Football but wanting to play at a slower pace.

Gordon Hopkins reflects on the first session and reports on how the event was received by participants;

Following a joint effort of the local Saturday football league & Test Valley Borough Council and despite strenuous efforts to get the ‘message out there’ with the support of local Breeze FM Radio, our posters advertising the sessions plus word-of-mouth it was not certain who how many might turn up

Fears were soon allayed as 13 players and five admin team arrived to enjoy the first taster session. With excellent support from Laura of TVBC and Keith Wyatt the league president who took charge of the registration process,the Hants FA in the person of Ellie who organised a short warmup session and then got two teams playing.

It was fascinating watching ex-players stopping themselves from running where the natural reaction was to do just that! …… and where ‘thinking’ about the game became an integral part of play. The results didn’t matter! Here was a group of like-minded guys enjoying the love of football and finding that social interaction is being played out to0!

The feedback from this first section was incredibly positive and those involved seemed determined ‘to tell their mates’ to join in with them next time. Ellie Hants FA  informed us it was first response as her experience of running similar events in the county has shown that some had only managed to attract three or four players.

The sessions continue to January, February &  March each Tuesday evening 5:40pm to 6:40pm at the Andover Leisure Centre. A small free of just £3 is required that helps cover costs.
