Winton Community Academy Students at Casting Connections Exhibition

Andover College calls on young artists in creative community project

Andover College recently partnered with The Roche Court Educational Trust and Test Valley Arts Society in the community art project, ‘Casting Connections’ for Year 9 Art students at Winton Community Academy.  This exciting and challenging new project gave young learners the opportunity to create a variety of professional work for a final exhibition, which was opened to the public this December in the new gallery space at the College.

The ‘Casting Connections’ project spanned three months and included a trip to the New Art Centre, Roche Court Sculpture Park to make observational drawings, as well as a series of workshops at Andover College with their experts to develop the initial work into prints and 3D casts made from plaster and concrete.

Art & Design Lecturer from Andover College, Carlie Forsyth said:

When The Roche Court Educational Trust reached out to us about a joint workshops and exhibition, we were thrilled. The project gave us the platform to showcase to young learners the importance of continuing with creative subjects and the opportunities available through our vast range of facilities.

Zoe Crockford, Art teacher at Winton Community Academy explained how the project benefited students’ understanding of the Arts, saying:

This opportunity gave students a taste of college education and beyond through a sophisticated way of working and learning. It has been very rewarding to see so many young learners engaged and proud of their artistic achievements.

The new gallery space is just one element of Andover College’s new Art, Design and Digital Futures facility. Designed to take students’ learning to an entirely new level, the open-plan space encourages artistic collaboration and experimentation, both of which were strongly present in the Casting Connections workshops.

Emma Kerr, Head of Education at The Roche Court Educational Trust concluded:

It is vital that young students have the opportunity to visit art galleries, as well as making connections with local colleges. These experiences expose them to new ideas and knowledge in their artistic development, as well as helping them to make informed choices about future careers. These are the core reasons why the project with the College and Test Valley Arts was created, and the Casting Connections exhibition perfectly demonstrates this collective endeavour.
