Andover school children's creativity gets rewarded with adventure

Andover children’s creativity rewarded with adventure

Budding writers from Andover’s John Hanson School were rewarded with a day of adventure as part of a prize for taking part in the annual ‘Big Write’ competition at their school.

The 10 winners, all aged between 13 and 15, were taken on the adventure day at Charlton Lakeside where they were treated to kayaking, canoeing and archery lessons led by Valley Leisure activity leaders.

Other prizes in the competition included WHSmith vouchers, book tokens and a Kindle Fire HD.

The ‘Big Write’ is part of John Hanson Community School’s on-going drive to raise the profile of writing and improve pupils’ literacy. Good literacy levels are vital as they progress through the school and into the world of work.

This year, the students were tasked to create an extended piece of writing called The Journey.

Year 10 student and winner of first prize, Solange Cabral, who wants to be an author, said:

I really enjoyed the competition and would like to do it again next year – depending on the theme!

Another student, Mollie Stockwell, who came third in the Year 9 competition drew on the Olympics, telling the story of a girl who strived to succeed as an Olympic runner after her dad died
